I had tried Bodybuilding Warehouse (BBW) Banana Premium Whey a while back and remembered really liking it because of the strong taste and low fat/carb qualities. It was also great value costing just £34.99 for 3kg of whey protein and provided the perfect blend when throwing some blueberries and additional bananas into the shake for a morning protein hit. Reading the MuscleTalk forum, members were discussing one of BBW other Premium Whey flavours, Choc-Cookie, and, having read lots of opinions about it, I was eager to try it out. I am one of those people that get regular cravings for chocolate so by taking a chocolate cookie flavour protein shake; this was one way to fulfil that urge whilst staying healthy.
BBW Premium Whey contains a blend of de-lactosed pure whey protein isolate, whey protein concentrate and hydrolysed whey. This three pronged formula provides high levels of amino acids which are needed for building lean muscle and quick recovery post workout. With only 1.56g of fat per scoop it is also very low in fat so perfect for those of you who are looking to gain lean muscle or lose weight.
You may have already noticed that we have featured BBW Premium Whey in our top 10 recommended supplements on the homepage. This gives you a good indication already of how much we like this product. It is not only very cost effective but also has a great taste and helps you recover fast after strenuous workouts which is one of the claims given by BBW on their website and one we agree with.
I like my protein shakes to have that thickness quality; there are many brands who sell own brand protein which, when you taste it using just 1 scoop, tastes weak, bland and lacking in flavour. I remember when I first tried Myprotein Cookies and Cream Impact Whey Protein; it tasted quite sickly but also quite weak (we recommend Myprotein True Whey which has a much stronger flavour). BBW Premium Whey is the opposite, with just 1 scoop you have a thick protein shake and a strong flavour whilst the taste is also 'chocolatey' enough to really enjoy it. Like OneOn Whey Pro Max Chocolate, which we have also reviewed, BBW Choc-Cookie contains cocoa powder which gives it that dark chocolate/brownie taste; perhaps Choc-Brownie is a more accurate description!
There was discussion on the MuscleTalk website about how the Choc-Cookie flavour was 'too thick' and perhaps BBW had changed the formula. I found that if you go for 1 scoop (BBW recommend 1-2 scoops per serving), with water, you do need to give it a good 5-8 second shake and you have the perfect, smooth, thick consistency. I would not recommend 2 scoops because, and this is our only criticism, it can get very thick and after a good 8-10 second shake you are sometimes left with dry powder at the top of the shaker. You can mitigate this by using an electronic blender (a coil shaker might also work) but I like to shake my protein drinks by hand and found 1 scoop is more than adequate to get 22g of protein and a great consistency; it also means you get more servings per tub! We still haven't found a whey protein which gets close to Optimum Nutrition 100% Gold Standard Whey for the way it blends almost instantly due to the ultra fine whey protein grains but you are paying £45 for 2.2kg if you want to buy that.
Unlike Myprotein Cookies and Cream Impact Whey Protein which I did get sick of after 2kg of my 5kg bag (I felt it was too sweet), I have nearly finished 4kg of BBW Choc-Cookie Premium Whey and still feel it it is a great tasting supplement. It does have a slightly sweet taste which may not be to everyone's taste but this is why BBW offer alternative, more 'fruity' flavours, such as Cherry Burst, Vanilla and Strawberry.
So, in conclusion, I feel that BBW have an excellent whey protein supplement with their Premium Whey offering and this is why it features in their top 5 best selling supplements at bodybuildingwarehouse.co.uk. Yes, thickness is an issue if you want to use more than 2 scoops, but use 1 and you will get a strong, thick shake with a good flavour that does also work to help muscle recovery after you workout. I have been taking it on training days as a pre workout drink an hour before training, during workouts with Dextrose and after workouts to refuel my muscles and would have no qualms about snapping up another 4kg tub once I have finished it. BBW Premium Whey is also available in 3kg packets with prices starting at £34.99 and samples are also available, priced £1.99 (see top right).
