Optimum Nutrition Platinum HydroWhey is the most advanced whey protein that Optimum Nutrition has ever developed. Whilst the Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey is a fantastic supplement made of a combination of ultra fine pro peptides and hydrolised whey protein, HydroWhey takes it to another level because it is made entirely from pure advanced hydrolised whey isolates. This means you get less fat, less sugar, fewer carbohydrates, less cholesterol, less lactose and more essential amino acids, BCAAs and protein per serving. In fact, with Optimum Nutrition Platinum HydroWhey, there is 0g of sugar per serving, 0g of lactose, 0g cholesterol and only 1g of total fat (2% of your RDA). So HydroWhey is fantastic if you're looking to diet and gain lean muscle whilst it is also perfect if you're looking to gain muscle mass.
Isolates are the purest form of protein that you can get as they undergo an ultra filtration process when the whey protein is manufactured. Breaking down the protein from large into smaller pieces in this way means, as well as the excellent health benefits already mentioned, the protein can enter your muscle cells quicker, absorb quicker and therefore start to work on muscle recovery, repair and growth quicker. The additional of digestive enzymes aids the absorption process.
So how are the large proteins hydrolised? Firstly they are purified so excess moisture, fat, cholesterol and other materials are removed so you are left with only 1g fat and 2g carbohydrates per serving. The protein is then broken down into smaller pieces before being enhanced with micro BCAAs for added effectiveness. You get nearly 9g (8.8g) of Leucine, Isoleucine and Valine (the 3 essential amino acids) per scoop.
There are three flavours available in the Optimum Nutrition Platinum HydroWhey range; Turbo Chocolate, Supercharged Strawberry and Velocity Vanilla. Optimum Nutrition were kind enough to send us a 1.59kg (3.5lb) 40 serving tub to try before writing this review so we could provide you with the information you need before making your decision about whether to buy. HydroWhey is also available to buy in a slightly smaller 795g tub (20 servings) if you would like to try before you buy.
I have tried a few whey isolate supplements before and found them to lack in taste because the hydrolised process means you don't get the sugars added in which you get with a simple whey protein. However you can be assured with HydroWhey that a weak flavour is definitely not what you will receive; just like the Gold Standard Whey, HydroWhey retains the flavour and is a very good whey isolate supplement. We received the Turbo Chocolate HydroWhey to review and the taste is just what you would hope and expect from this award winning brand, delicious both with water and milk. I would recommend drinking it with water and a few ice cubes to fully appreciate its qualities.
HydroWhey also mixes with water extremely quickly as you would hope from a whey isolate. Even the Gold Standard Whey mixes fully in about 2 seconds of shaking and HydroWhey is exactly the same because of the ultra fine hydrolised protein isolates. It is difficult to pick out any criticisms with this product. As with all whey isolate supplements, they don't disguise the taste of added supplements as well as a simple whey protein because they are so pure. So if you like to add BCAA powder for example into your whey protein then you are more likely to taste it with a whey protein isolate supplement such as HydroWhey. But because one serving of HydroWhey contains 8.8g of BCAA you can save yourself some money on BCAA powder and get all the amino acids you need from this supplement alone. The full list of amino acids found in HydroWhey are as follows;
Tryptophan, Valine, Threonine, Isoleucine, Leucine, Lysine, Phenylalanine, Methionine
Arginine, Cystine, Tyrosine, Histidine, Proline, Glutamine & Glutamic Acid
Aspartic Acid, Serine, Glycine, Alanine
So the claims are that HydroWhey will help you recover from your workouts quickly but is this true? It is difficult to say but I have been taking it this week and managed to do five workouts in six days when usually I only do three workouts a week to ensure my muscles are fully recovered before I hit them hard again. By taking HydroWhey I have been able to tackle workouts for 4 consecutive days at a high intensity which I am sure has been helped by the quickness of the isolates getting into my muscles alongside the strong amino acid and glutamine profile found in HydroWhey.
Overall I would certainly recommend Optimum Nutrition HydroWhey and will now be using this in the foreseeable future for my whey protein needs to supplement my high protein food diet. I would recommend taking it around your workouts (pre and post). I used to take a protein shake when I woke up but this can cause an insulin spike so I have now changed this so I eat a high protein breakfast instead of a shake such as fish, steak or eggs (with yolk!).
You might want to think about stacking HydroWhey with Gold Standard Whey which I have been doing over the last few weeks. I have been taking Gold Standard Whey pre workout and HydroWhey post workout because I feel HydroWhey is more suited to a post workout protein hit for the scientific reasons explained and the ingredients used. This will also ensure a 40 servings tub will last you 1-2 months. You can read our Optimum Nutrition Whey Protein review and also watch a video review of the Optimum Nutrition Mocha Cappuccio Whey Protein which is the one I have been using recently alongside the HydroWhey.
