Myprotein Liquid Egg Whites Review

Egg whites are the purest form of protein with an excellent nutritional profile - high in protein, low in carbohydrates, low in fats and low in cholesterol

**Please note Myprotein currently have stopped selling their liquid egg white (September 2012). Whilst they rectify an issue with a recent batch we can recommend buying either the Myprotein Egg White Powder or Myprotein Whole Egg Powder as an alternative egg protein supplement**

Introduction

I had been thinking about buying Myprotein Liquid Egg Whites for a while but with a high protein diet already in place consisting of meat, fish and eggs, topped up by regular protein shakes, I had always found a reason not to buy them. I also had doubts about how to store the liquid egg whites, how quickly they should be consumed and how they should be taken. Nonetheless, having read many excellent reviews, I decided to try the 6 pack barn farmed egg whites and you can read my thoughts of this product below.

Protein In Eggs - Why Use Egg Whites?

If you're looking for a product which is high in protein, low in carbohydrates, low in fat and extremely functional then liquid egg whites are for you. In fact, they are the purest form of protein you can get and if you speak to anyone looking to maintain a high protein diet, I can guarantee they will be consuming eggs by the bucket load (or carton load...)! Egg whites are also nature's number one protein source because they are 100% bio-available meaning they are fully absorbed by the body with none of the amino acids going to waste.

Egg whites are also an extremely good alternative to a protein shake for people looking to lose weight because they are free from artificial flavouring, stabilisers, preservatives, added sugar and e numbers which many protein supplements contain and they have virtually no carbohydrates, fat or cholesterol. However they are also very functional, many athletes add them into their protein shakes for an additional protein top up whilst they can also be used for scrambled egg, omelette, baking and even consumed straight from the bottle!

Why Myprotein Liquid Egg Whites?

Many of you may have heard of the brand Two Chicks who sell egg whites in supermarkets and online. However they only sell small cartons and as a result the price of buying them works out to be much more expensive than Myprotein's Liquid Egg Whites. The price per kg (as of today) for Two Chicks is £6.18; the price per kg of Myprotein barn farmed is only £3.92!

MP MAX Liquid Egg Whites are:

Neutralising the avidin content means your body can fully utilise the B vitamin 'Biotin' which helps the body efficiently utilise energy stores. The pasteurisation process allows the egg whites to be stored for up to 5 months in room temperate so they do not need to be stored in a refrigerator whilst other egg white products usually only have a shelf life of 30 days.

There are two options available for you to buy, either barn farmed or free range. 6 x 1kg barn farmed bottles retails currently at £23.49 (just £3.92 per bottle) whilst 6 x 1kg free range bottles retail at £30.99 (£5.17 per bottle) if ordering direct from Myprotein's website. If you're after free range, you can also buy from Monster Supplements.

When you order, make sure you're feeling particularly strong if you need to carry the box home with you because the box it arrives in is huge!

Myprotein Liquid Egg White Nutritional Information (Per 100g)

Using Liquid Egg Whites

Before buying I had read a few reviews on Myprotein's website from customers saying they couldn't drink the egg whites straight from the bottle and that you need a cordial (i.e. squash or juice) or a protein shake with them. Then other customers replied by saying they were easy to drink on their own and didn't taste of anything.

After a gruelling gym workout I decided to put it to the test and I certainly share the views of the latter customers. I found the egg whites were extremely easy to drink from the bottle, in fact it was so easy I somehow managed to consume 500g in about 2 gulps! There was no aftertaste; really it felt like I was just drinking water. Now whenever I want to top up my daily protein intake and I am at home, I often just take the bottle from the fridge and gulp down 100-200g but I know that I could easily drink half a bottle if I wanted to.

I have also been using the egg whites in my protein shakes when I wake up in the morning, before/after a workout and in the evening before bed. Simply add 200-300g of water into your bottle, a scoop of protein powder and 100ml of Myprotein Liquid Egg White.

Alternatively, for a healthy breakfast, create a shake consisting of water, liquid egg whites, flaxseed and porridge oats; the perfect combination of protein, fibre and low GI carbohydrates to kick start your day.

I did try and use them for scrambled eggs but I didn't particularly like the taste and found out you would need to use a lot of the liquid for one plate.

Other egg white recipes which you could experiment with include protein pancakes, egg fried rice, smoothies, quiches, meringues and souffle.

How Long Do Myprotein Liquid Egg Whites Last?

How to store liquid egg whites is a common question asked on the internet. Although Myprotein's have a shelf life of 5 months, once opened it is recommended that the bottle is consumed within 2-3 days with the lid secure. I know some people use Tupperware to measure out portions, freeze them then defrost them on days they want to use them. To be honest, I really don't think this is necessary. I tend to go through a bottle in 4-6 days and after 5-6 days the egg whites will not go off, do not give off a bad odour and are still perfectly drinkable, especially if you're mixing them in with other liquids or protein powder.

Obviously it depends how often you intend to use the liquid egg whites but my recommendation would simply be to open a bottle, keep it in the refrigerated and use it within a week. Keep your unopened bottles stored in a cupboard at room temperature.

Conclusion

I have been really impressed with Myprotein's Liquid Egg Whites. Initially I went through my first bottle in 2 days and thought these 6 bottles won't last me longer than 2 weeks! However you go through days where you don't use it because you don't have time, want to use actual eggs or just don't want to eat eggs! You also may not need to use it if you're already consuming plenty of protein during the day. I have now had the product for over 3 weeks and still have 1 bottle left so I feel you will get a good months supply of high quality pure protein for just £23.49 if using the barn farmed version.

If you believe that you will consume more than I do, there is an option to buy in bulk which I know many bodybuilders take up; buying up to 11 or more for example reduces the RRP of barn farmed to just £18.79 each and free range to just £24.79 each.

Egg whites are a fantastic source of protein for those looking to bulk up and build muscle plus those of you either looking to lose weight or tone up. I would highly recommend this product and will be putting in a new order once the last bottle has been consumed.
